Meet Student State Representative Gabriel, Be Strong’s February 2022 Student of the Month!
“Even if you can’t change the world, you can change the world for those around you,” Gabriel said. “Start there and be the difference for them.”
Where there’s a job to be done, Gabriel is bound to show up with a smile, ready to help. This Be Strong Student State Representative always puts others first, focusing his time and effort on helping his community and those in need.
As a ninth grader in Slidell, Louisiana, Gabriel is known by his friends and family as bright, selfless, and giving.
He regularly collects and donates toys for children in his area, knowing that even little things can make a big difference. His kindness goes beyond the holidays, as he makes a habit of giving to others in his everyday life.
“Say something nice and positive to someone around you, do something nice for someone,” Gabriel said. “Even just one of these small steps could make a world of difference.”
Gabriel leads by example, showing his peers how to be kind, inclusive, and resilient. Even in the darkest times, he believes in always finding hope. “Stay positive even when it feels like the world is caving in on top of you,” Gabriel said. “Give your time and talents to help make a difference for other people.”
But his efforts don’t stop there. In addition to helping others, he recognizes the importance of teaching others how to help themselves. Resilience and emotional strength are vital for long-term wellbeing.
“I am a friend to everyone,” Gabriel said. “I’m there for people when they are having a bad day and I do my best to help them feel better about themselves and teach them how to help others feel better as well.”
Advocacy does come with its challenges — standing up for others isn’t always easy, but it is important. Gabriel stands up for what is right, giving a voice to folks who otherwise wouldn’t be heard.
“Sometimes you have to stand up for others who cannot stand up for themselves,” Gabriel said. “Speak up when you see injustice and safely do your part to be the difference for those around you.”
Though Gabriel may just be one kid in one community, the impact of his kindness creates a chain reaction of positivity in those around him. Even the smallest gesture can inspire goodness in the world.
“Change has to start somewhere, at some time,” Gabriel said. “Let it start with you right now and be the change that those around you need.”
