Meet Emily, Be Strong’s August 2024 Student of the Month!

Emily’s journey has been one of growth and unwavering dedication. Despite the challenges she’s faced with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and bullying, Emily is a shining example of resilience and compassion. Those around her describe Emily as the “most caring person” who selflessly shares her hard-earned wisdom to help others cope with struggles in their own lives.

Emily became a Be Strong Student Representative in 8th grade to turn her own painful experiences around to help others. Now in 9th grade, she’s excited and ready to use so much of what she’s learned at Be Strong to launch a peer impact group at her school. She’ll be teaching her fellow students about resilience, how to nurture their mental and emotional health, and leading opportunities for volunteerism. Emily’s excited to continue her own personal growth while empowering others who are facing similar challenges. She uses her story with hopes of preventing others from experiencing the same hardships she has.

Emily also understands the importance of taking care of herself so that she can be there for others. By prioritizing self-care each week, she knows she’s better equipped to listen peers’ challenges and offer empathetic advice when asked. Her willingness to reach out for help further demonstrates her strength of character and her understanding that asking for support is not a weakness, but the greatest sign of strength.

While Emily continues developing her leadership skills, the responsibility she feels to advocate for herself and others stands out, especially around peer pressure. “Don’t be afraid to say no,” she instructs. “It can be hard to say no, especially if something could make you popular, but you need to do what is best for you. I’d like to see people be more respectful of themselves, not caring what people think.”

Emily’s transformation and the positive impact she makes on the people around her shows the power of resilience, empathy, and her desire to make a difference. As she works to establish her peer group this year, we know that Emily will continue to inspire and uplift her community, leaving a lasting mark on all those she encounters.
