December is well known as the season of giving. Giving and the ability to give back to others is what makes community work. However, we must make sure we are also taking care of ourselves.

Self-care is the art of nurturing your mental, emotional and physical health. When done correctly, self-care improves mood and reduces anxiety. The law of attraction is the belief that positive or negative thinking has the power to bring positive or negative experiences, that similar energies are drawn to one another. Put plainly, when you are positive, positive things are faster drawn to you.

Among the top tactics for embracing and engaging in self-care is practicing affirmations. Affirmations are short, positive statements used to challenge negative thoughts. Many people use affirmations, as they help to overcome negative thought patterns and self-sabotage. They can be as simple as saying to yourself, “I am confident. I am valued.”

The catch is positive affirmations require daily attention to be long lasting and effective. There are multiple benefits to affirmations; among the biggest is lowering stress. Besides that, the practice has the power to make us more resilient when difficulties do arise. Affirmations can help us to react less defensively in tough situations.

Many popular affirmations are centered around health. According to author, teacher and lecturer, Louise Hay, these two affirmations can influence your health for the better: “My happy thoughts help create my healthy body and wellness is the natural state of my body,” and “I’m in perfect health.”

What will you choose?

Choosing affirmations in spite of a negative situation is just like happiness, it is a choice. Combine your daily affirmations with resilience training and master your emotions. Affirmations have the power to change your world, impact your life and broaden your horizons if you allow them to – but it all starts by changing your mind. Speak positivity into your life, starting today, and declare greatness!

“If you want to change the way you feel about yourself, first you have to change the way you think about yourself.” -Gavin Bird

To help you start, make sure the affirmations you choose are credible and of course, positive. Write them down, in present tense, and say them to yourself, out loud, with feeling. Repeat this every day. You will notice as you begin to feel more motivated and ultimately, optimistic.

Declare this over yourself to reclaim your life today, “I am the architect of my life; I build its foundation and choose its contents.”

Create your own affirmation. For example, my name is Tiarsha and I am tenacious. Tenacious means determined and not easily dispelled or moved. What is your affirmation for today and everyday? Below are some examples of affirmations for success. Put the phrase I am in front of each verb and begin to celebrate your true self!
