State Representative Avery M.

Avery M - HI Student Rep Profile Image

“Our community is very diverse, with many students coming to our school throughout the year. I want to make them feel welcome.”

-Avery

Why Avery was Nominated:

Avery was involved in the Best Buddies program in elementary school and has chosen to continue her commitment to the program in intermediate school, when so many of her peers have become focused on fitting in and social acceptance. She is a very dedicated leadership student and is always willing to go above and beyond with her school and service commitments. She is very thoughtful when creating activities, making sure that they are accessible to all students. I am very thankful to have Avery on our student leadership team because she is an excellent role model when it comes to commitment, integrity, and ethical decision making.

State Representative John V.

“I want everyone to know that bullying is not okay and that we deserve respect like all of our peers.”

–  John

Why John was Nominated:

Kevin officially joined our family on October 3, 2003, our Gotcha Day. Gotcha’ Day is a term used in the adoption community for when an adoption is finalized, similar to Familyversary. It’s the day we were blessed with Kevin. Kevin has bilateral cleft lip and palate in addition to being on the spectrum. In Hawaiʻi, he is considered a Haole, a Hawaiʻian term for someone who is not Native Hawaiʻian or Polynesian. He has endured bullying from students and others. Yet despite it all, he has a positive attitude. He goes out of his way to be friendly to anyone and everyone, and will willingly offer his assistance. His major project in English at Kapolei Charter (where he is on the diploma track in the 11th grade) is to write a book. He chose his topic, a realistic but fictional look at bullying.
