State Representative Niyah D.

Savannah K - Student Rep Profile Image

“Kindness isn’t something that you find and pick up, it’s something that you use and cherish forever.  So don’t forget to Be Strong while showing kindness.”

– Niyah

Why Niyah was Nominated:

Niyah D. is an excellent choice for this honor. She started a Kindness Club at school. One of the first events for the club was a grade level walk and talk. Every morning, when the weather allows, we gather to walk and talk on our track before school starts. It has been a positive way to start our day! Students get to spend time with each other while exercising. The positive start to our morning makes the rest of the day go smoothly. Niyah likes to hold meetings and talk about what it means to be kind. She explains to them the difference between being “kind” and being “nice.” Kindness is not a weakness; in fact, it takes more patience to be kind during times of conflict. After she leads the discussion, the students break up into groups and play board games. She makes diverse groups; in other words, students cannot stay with their friends or people they already know. They have to play the games with other students and practice their team building skills. These types of events build a culture of inclusion and respect in our building. One evening, Niyah wrote over 150 positive messages to our 5th graders. She arrived early at school and placed all of the notes on their lockers. The students were thrilled to receive the messages! In fact, many of them still have the messages on their lockers.

State Representative Tahany H.

Student Profile Image

“I am strong in my community by helping others and modeling positive behaviors.”

– Tahany

Why Tahany H. was Nominated:

“Tahany is willing to educate others when she see’s injustices being done at school. As OHS Muslim/American population has risen, and students with hijabs have become more common, Tahany started to see more students with incorrect or misguided information. She helped form the MASA (Muslim American Student Association) at Oswego High School as a way to celebrate the Muslim/American culture, but to also bring awareness to the student body. When you know more about your fellow students, you are less likely to engage in bullying. Her [Tahany’s] club held after school meetings where kids from all backgrounds could come and learn more about Muslim/Americans. It was well received and attended. Tahany’s willingness to bridge a cultural gap is one example of many in regards to her high moral character.”

State Representative Karla O.

Student Profile Image

“I’m a survivor of bullying. So now, I stand tall & let those people around me know that it is not ok to disrespect, humiliate, or degrade someone. It is not ok for someone who gets bullied to say, “I’m used to it”.”

– Karla

Why Karla was Nominated:

“Karla is the bee’s knees. She is compassionate, empathetic, brilliant, charismatic, hardworking, and dedicated. She listens to others and hears what they have to say, she speaks her mind, and she is ever intellectually curious. She is a genuinely friendly student, sincerely cares about others, and is responsible enough to take on responsibility in leadership.”

“It doesn’t matter where they come from, how they act, or what they look like. We’re all the same inside.”

– Savannah

Why Savannah was Nominated:

“I am nominating Savannah to be our school’s Be Strong Student State Representative. She has many amazing qualities, but ones that stand out are her empathy and attention to others around her. Savannah lifts up other students with ease. She continuously has a smile on her face and encourages others to smile or laugh along with her. Savannah also possesses superb leadership skills. She is organized and focused, which makes her a great founder for our “WDT” club.”

State Representative Lainey O.

Student Profile Image

“If you can’t find a kind person, be one for someone else.”

– Lainey

Why Lainey was Nominated:

“Lainey is an outstanding young woman. I am the sponsor of a program called Peer Helpers here at Lincoln-Way East. Lainey was nominated by her peers as a peer to whom he/she would speak if he/she had a problem. We then train these Peer Helpers to be non judgmental listeners and sources of support for our student body. Lainey has been an excellent choice. She is warm, kind, and accepting of all different types of kids at our school. In fact, a couple weeks ago one of our students was very upset about not having been chosen on a team in PE. Lainey observed his sadness while he was talking to their teacher and she walked over and invited him to be on her team, she is just that type of person. I have a great deal of respect for her and for this reason I have nominated her to represent us in this movement.”

State Representative Ava M.

Savannah K - Student Rep Profile Image

“I choose to Be Strong by showing my community that even one smiling face can make an enormous impact. I know the smallest act of kindness can make some’s day and can pass to someone else. By being strong, I hope that people keep to pass the kindness in my community!”

– Ava

Why Ava was Nominated:

Ava is an outstanding student, friend, and all-around person. She is incredibly outgoing and regularly looks for ways to engage in conversations with her peers, as well as adults. Without being asked, she looks for ways to help others, both academically and socially. Ava has great ideas and actively looks for ways to put those ideas into action. She is currently involved in student council, Snowball (as a student leader and peer counselor), both travel and school soccer teams, and the TNT Leadership Program. Ava always has a warm, welcoming smile, and she carries herself confidently, but compassionately. She is a natural leader, and those around her gravitate toward her kind, friendly nature.
