Why Jesula was Nominated:

I would like to nominate a phenomenal student – JJ- a 12th grader atAtlantic High School in Delray Beach, FL. Jesula is the face of anti-bullying and overcoming obstacles in our district- for students, staff, and administration. Many leaders have invited her to speak- including, various public officials, the mayor, the Palm Beach County Schools superintendent, AVID directors, radio and TV broadcasters, and many more. She has been a keynote speaker for the Career Teachers Symposium, performed at colleges and she isan intern for the city attorney, where she represents the teens in our community. In total, she has spoken for tens of thousands of people. She has traveled to Washington DC with ADL. Jesula is the FAAOP president, junior and senior class president and AVID president. Her accomplishments over the past three years are too numerous to list. I have attached links to some of her videos, anti-bullying PSA, as well as the formal recommendation letter. Overall, Jesula is the ideal candidate torepresent Be Strong.

We nominate Sage, 6th grade, to be a Be Strong Student Representative for Florida. Sage has excellent people skills and quite simply, loves people. He always knows how to make someone feel welcome and important.

Why Eleanor was Nominated:

It is my great pleasure to recommend Eleanor to represent Atlantic West Elementary School as their Be Strong State Representative. I have known Eleanor since she was in first grade when I had the pleasure of being her teacher. I was beyond delighted when I found out that I would again have the privilege of teaching. Eleanor when she was in the fourth grade and I was asked to teach fourth grade! During those few years I have watched Eleanor grow into a mature young lady who excels not only in academics but in her personal journey of being kind, and showing compassion and empathy to those around her. Eleanor has been a wonderful role model for her peers. She is always willing to help if her friends need some extra tutoring. She is quick to supply a pencil or two to a classmate, and she ALWAYS has a hug ready for any student who is not feeling well or is just having a bad day! I am confident that Eleanor will make an excellent Be Strong representative!

Kamryn is an amazing young lady with tremendous leadership abilities. She has the kindest heart and strives to make Valley Ridge Academy the safest and most inclusive school possible. Kamryn is wise beyond her years and has great vision for how Be Strong can truly make a remarkable difference at our school. When approached with the idea of taking on the role of VRA’s Be Strong Student State Representative, Kamryn didn’t hesitate and is ready to move forward with leading our chapter.

Why Everett was Nominated:

Everett was the first student that came to mind when thinking of who to nominate. He is non-judgmental and conscientious of his actions towards others. He is accepting of all students. He used to spend time with me in my office every Friday. I also had other students with me at the time. He was so kind to the other students. Some had disabilities others were a little quirky. He interacted with all of them. I could tell it made the other students feel awesome. Not only is he a kind person he is also a stellar student. He is a wonderful role model to all students at BRCMS.

He is a remarkable role-model for his peers, and for anyone who meets him. I have the privilege of witnessing him making the world a better place. Students like Sage are the reason why I teach. Here is a brief excerpt from the 6th grade essay: “Use words, not weapons. I will not watch or become an audience to violence, and I will find places to seek help… I will encourage people to walk away from violence.”

Why Grace was Nominated:

Grace is a young lady who has been my daughter’s best friend since they were in second grade. She has matured into a young woman with great character. She is resilient, confident, strong, and is a self-motived young woman. I have had the pleasure to watch her grow up and see how she has, and continues to Be Strong in the face of life’s challenges. Her work ethic and tenacity to become the best at whatever she does is infectious. The thing I love most about Grace is that she is a total FAMILY GIRL. She loves, honors and respects her family and extended family more than anything and is always spending time with them over anything else. I believe Grace would be a great asset to the State Representative program as she continues be involved with our community, showing strength, encouragement and purpose in her daily life.

Madelyn is a true leader! She inspires everyone she meets to be the very best they can be. She has a true vision for how to make our school and our world a better place with which to live. When approached with the idea of creating a “Be Strong” chapter at Valley Ridge Academy, Madelyn didn’t hesitate when she was asked to lead this program. She sees this as an opportunity to change the culture and mindset of our students to where being kind and looking out for one another is the norm and not the exception.

Why Emily was Nominated:

Emily refuses to succumb to being bullied into teenage behaviors that isolate other students based upon her peers’ fluctuating “like or dislike” towards other “less popular” students. She said, “I wish there was a way to make all those kids, like myself, feel worthy and not so sad and left out at school.” Emily is currently involved in multiple clubs & groups at school and also volunteers with younger players at her soccer club. She has the stamina, determination and responsibly to represent Be Strong & her school.

Why Marwa was Nominated:

Marwa is an active and engaged student. She is very smart and committed to our school. This is demonstrated in her academic progress, with a 4.0 grade point average. Additionally, she is a member of the school’s Cadet program and a student representative at our School Advisory Council meetings. We are extremely proud of this student!

Lance is a student that has great leadership skills. He is in National Honor Society, and when I approached him with the We Dine Together idea, he was very excited to help those students that feel invisible to begin feeling like a part of our school. He is a caring and kind person that volunteers with people experiencing homelessness.

Why Mia was Nominated:

I am nominating Mia because she is a model student at our school. She is the student club sponsor for our We Dine Together lunch program. As the student sponsor, she has been successful at gathering new students to be a part of the club and she has already helped to create an environment of inclusion at the cafeteria during lunch. She has a very positive and outgoing attitude and has shown me that she has the leadership skills and assertiveness to be a great leader. I also love that she wants everyone to feel welcomed and that she shows great dedication towards her schoolwork and friendships. She is the true definition of a student leader.

Why Joshua was Nominated:

Josh is a very passionate young man who cares deeply for other students. He has worked hard to get a club started on our campus. Josh was born very premature and has struggled throughout his life. Currently, he wears very thick glasses and has trouble seeing even with them. He really knows what it can feel like to be left out. Josh has learned how to accentuate the positive. He has a beautiful singing voice and is involved in our choir. He has learned to be comfortable with himself. Josh feels strongly about helping other students who might not yet have that strong sense of self. He wants all students at our school to feel special in their own way.

Some main issues my students and I have always discussed are the problems involved in where to sit at lunch, who to sit with, and mostly-what happens if you have no one to sit with? We have also discussed the rise of bullying, the concerns that most times adults do not see or hear about it until it is too late, and what we can all do to make a difference. Katie is very interested in being the representative as she will be a freshman next year and is willing to see the program through during her four years at HHS.

Some main issues my students and I have always discussed are the problems involved in where to sit at lunch, who to sit with, and mostly-what happens if you have no one to sit with? Why Alejandra was Nominated:

Alejandra is an excellent student, a student leader, and has an outgoing and caring personality. Alejandra was named a national finalist in the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program. This scholarship program supports exceptionally promising students through comprehensive educational advising and financial support from eighth grade through high school. Only 50 students nationwide are selected each year for this prestigious program. Next summer, before entering her freshman year at Lely High School, Alejandra will be attending a college preparatory program at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, each summer during her high school career, Alejandra will be attending enrichment programs through domestic and international universities.

State Representative Ifeanyi U.

Ifeanyi - Florida Student Rep Profile Image“We are strong!”

Why Ifeanyi was Nominated:

Ifeanyi is a member of the school’s Spoken Word Team and has competed at various events. Recently she placed 4th in the Word Up! Spoken Word Competition, and placed 3rd in the Talented 10th Poetry Competition at the City of Hollywood. She is a team finalist for the statewide Louder Than a Bomb Poetry Competition, and is an amazing writer. Ifeanyi is a diligent and committed student with clear goals in life. She has already achieved 21 of 24 credits required for graduation. A member of the National Honors Society, Ifeanyi takes both Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses, and currently has a 3.88 cumulative GPA. Her determination to do well is reflected in the way she motivates her peers to make quality decisions, and she is a person of strong character. Ifeanyi is an excellent candidate for the Be Strong program, and with her work ethic, would be a true asset.

Why Amaya was Nominated:

I nominated Amaya as an ambassador because she is a very kind and compassionate person. Amaya works well with others, and is committed to doing the right thing. She is involved with different clubs at school, including Spoken Word, Drama and the Peace Club, and will be a great student to connect with other clubs and groups to implement Be Strong activities. Amaya is a hard-working student and will definitely be a great representative for the Be Strong program.

State Representative Laurie L.

Laurie - Florida Student Rep Profile Image“We believe that by working together, we can make a difference.”

Why Laurie was Nominated:

Laurie is an amazing and well-rounded student. She participates in various clubs and activities in the school, and is a natural leader. One of the clubs that Laurie is part of is the Spoken Word Club. Through this program, Laurie uses performance art to raise awareness and educate others about important and relevant topics for young people. Laurie has performed in the community and at the school for various events, and is a competitor in the 2019 Louder Than a Bomb Statewide Poetry Competition. She has performed at a caliber that has allowed her to advance to both team and individual semi-finals. This accomplishment shows her level of dedication and commitment, as it takes tremendous effort to compete at such a high level. Laurie is also a school cheerleader, a member of the National Honors Society, and a supporter of the school’s Peace Club. With a 3.3 cumulative GPA, Laurie challenges herself by taking Advanced Placement coursework, and has 200 community service hours. Her goal is to achieve the 250 or more hours to receive the silver cord of distinction for service when she graduates in 2021. Laurie is an amazing asset to the school and her peers, as she is vocal and active in improving school culture. Overall, Laurie would be an amazing ambassador for the Be Strong program.

State Representative Sam D.

Sam - Florida Student Rep Profile Image“Students need positive ways to grow as people and express themselves in a positive way.”

Why Sam was Nominated:

Sam is a quality young man. He is a core member of the school’s Robotics Team, and has traveled around the country with the group for competitions. Sam is part of the robot building process from designing the robots to constructing them, and spends much of his free time at the school assisting the Robotics coach. He is also a member of the school’s Spoken Word Team, and will be competing in team semi-finals in the statewide Louder Than a Bomb Poetry Competition. Sam is a dedicated student, and manages to keep up with his studies despite his chaotic schedule. Sam currently has a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and intends to attend college to study Robotics. Sam is an amazing team player, and has an amazing sense of humor. He is compassionate towards others and acts as a positive force to motivate those around him. Sam would be a great addition to Be Strong, as his sense of empathy and inclusiveness enables him to successfully collaborate with others.

Why Justino was Nominated:

Justino is an exceptional student who is involved in the SGA, FBLA, and is an office aide. He is friendly and open to learning. Justino is in 7th grade, so he can help build and grow the club this year and continue to strengthen it next year, while in 8th grade. He will be able to use the SGA as a platform to recruit other team members to participate in We Dine Together. Justino and his fellow students are excited to use We Dine Together to improve the school culture.

Eve D - FL Student Representative Profile image“I choose to Be Strong in my community and school by making those around me feel as safe as possible.”

Why Eve was Nominated:

Evette is an outstanding student and person. She makes it her mission to make sure that all students feel included, connected and worthy. She is one of the founding members of DA for Change, a club that I sponsor at our school. The DA Student Ambassadors of Change club’s mission is to spark initiative in our students to become leaders and change agents in their schools and community, and foster an environment for good mental health and character development. This club encompasses the foundational values of symbiotic relationships, teamwork, peer mentorship, understanding/acceptance of diversity, and compassion for self and others. Evette is an good example of all of these things. She works hard to promote positive changes and instill a sense of understanding and love for diversity in our school and community and inspires fellow students to do the same. The activities of our club are rooted in education and action. We want to help teach students how to understand and cope with stress, anxiety and stigmas. Whenever one of our students comes to the school counseling office needing help from one of our counselors and we are unavailable at the time, if Evette is there she tries to help that student. And this a student who has struggled herself so is very relatable for to her peers. I cannot say enough great things about her.
