State Representative Bailee C.

Bailee Profile Image“I am here to make a change.”

-Bailee

Why Bailee Was Nominated:

Bailee first approached me about starting a club at our school that would put students together at the lunch table. She was needing help in having a positive conversation with students that she doesn’t have a relationship with. She felt that many students feel lonely and unwanted during lunch time and that friendships can be started at the lunch table.

State Representative Namah A.

Namah Profile Image“I choose to Be Strong in my community by being there for the people around me & being the shoulder that they can lean on.”

-Namah

Why Namah Was Nominated:

Namah is my resident consultant on the pulse of our school. Namah is not afraid to confront a touchy situation nor does she shy away from courageous conversations. I have trouble remembering that she is only a sophomore, as her maturity and overall perspective on life reach far beyond her years. She always brings insight, empathy, and honesty to our meetings and is shaping up to be a leader for her peers. Namah has faced discrimination as a young Muslim, wearing hijab among her mostly white peers. She is a young woman who understands, first hand, how to confront adversity with grace and humor. I know that Namah possesses the maturity, drive, empathy, and passion to be a great Be Strong Student State Representative.

State Representative Cassie C.

Student Profile Image

“I firmly believe every one deserves a chance to be heard and respected.”

-Cassie

Why Cassie C. was Nominated:

Hello Be Strong!! I would like to submit a nomination for Cassie as State Representative for Missouri. If there is anyone in my school/city/state/region who will stand up for the under-represented, it is Cassie. I have known her for four years now, and not a day goes by that I dont see her supporting a friend, lending a hand, encouraging classmates, or shining her bright light as an individual. Cassie has no interest in fitting into any one particular “mold” as a young woman or student. She is an individual who stands tall on her values and speaks up for what she believes, no matter if her beliefs are met with resistance. In a time in one’s life when most teens are trying so very hard to “fit in” for various reasons, Cassie is one who is not afraid to part the waters in a respectful and impactful way. Last year, I noticed how she had been growing her hair out, and even commented a couple of times how I liked how she was wearing it. It might have been the very next day, she and a friend of hers arrived in my class with completely shaved heads. There may have been another student who had made some assumptions that perhaps this was an attention stunt. But, Cassie was very quick to point out that she and her friend had helped to raise several hundred dollars towards research for kids fighting cancer by shaving their heads. I was extremely impressed with the selflessness of her actions and words. I know that her act of kindness in this instance not only contributed to an incredible cause, but also prompted others to examine their own abilities to not only affect change, but to give pause to their own personal self-critics. Cassie has been an integral part of our We Dine Together Club at West High from the early days and has continued to reach out to club participants with words of encouragement and accountability, even through the summer months. She has an incredible sense of purpose and self-motivated responsibility. I have no doubt in my mind that Cassie will be a stand-out leader as a Be Strong State Representative. She is, after all, already changing the world around her.

State Representative Sarenna W.

Alex - MO Student State Rep Profile Image

“I remember walking into the lunch room and thinking,“I just don’t know where to sit.” That’s why I’m really glad that my school has this program. It was a place where anybody from any kind of background could come and just sit and hang out, talk to other people. It was just very welcoming. I’m really hoping that as state representative, I can help spread this more around my school and other schools in my area. It’s a really great program and I’m really proud to be apart of it.”

– Sarenna

Why Sarenna W. was Nominated:

I am nominating Sarenna to represent Be Strong for Missouri because she is one of the most positive and caring people that I know. Sarenna goes above and beyond in all areas of her life. She works to make sure others feel not just included, but good about themselves. As one of our original founding members of We Dine Together, she has been on the front lines from the very beginning. As a freshman, Sarenna was willing to put herself out there and find peers who seemed down-and-out, and try to lift them up by inviting them to join her at lunch. Most freshmen I know are not so willing to take the risk of being turned down or rejected. She has an inner confidence that radiates from her. I’ve witnessed her walk into a classroom and change the climate just with her positive energy alone. Sarenna is organized, often more on top of tasks than I am as her teacher. She is usually the first to remind her peers about We Dine Together meetings, or the first to offer encouragement to the whole group. I believe that Sarenna’s energy, positivity, motivation, and caring demeanor will make her an excellent Be Strong representative. I am sure that she will continue dedicate herself to the mission and vision of We Dine Together, and will take on the role of State Representative with passion and integrity.

State Representative Grace S.

Alex - MO Student State Rep Profile Image

“I want to share with students what it’s like to have struggles and I want to show how you can change someone’s life just by being kind and giving respect no matter who you are. We all want the same things – to be valued, to be respected and to feel good about ourselves.”

– Grace

Why Grace S. was Nominated:

Grace Strobel is an inspirational 23 yr. old model and speaker with Down syndrome. She had a vision; one that would help to bring about understanding, respect, and kindness to anyone feeling different and alone. Coming from her own pain, she wanted to change the way those who are looked upon as different-She along with her mother created a presentation called #TheGraceEffect, to bring about this awareness. She volunteers hundreds of hours preparing, rehearsing and speaking to students and other groups about kindness, respect, overcoming obstacles and one’s own worth..

State Representative Sophie M.

Alex - MO Student State Rep Profile Image

“I try to keep in mind that we can only see what’s happening on the outside and we don’t know what’s going on inside of a person’s mind. Not everyone’s going to have a good day, or maybe something’s bothering them, so I strive to treat others as if they need a friend. A few kind words to someone, or even a hug, can make a huge impact. So, Be Strong, be kind and the world will become a better place.”

– Sophie

Why Sophie M. was Nominated:

Sophie looks for students in the room who don’t have anyone to work with and will ask them if they want to be her partner or join for a group of 3. There was a student in the breakfast lunchroom alone and she went over and talked to him. The great part about her is she’s seen as ‘popular’ and I think people respect that aspect of her. In my advanced science class there are two students with downs syndrome who love working with her and she uses so much compassion and patience with them. She will still get her work done but help them to participate as well. She’s also part of our best buddies program participating in activities outside of class with those students with special needs
